From Stunning MAPPA Animation to a Divisive Ending, Why Jujutsu Kaisen Became a Global Phenomenon
Few anime series have dominated popular culture in recent years quite like Jujutsu Kaisen. Since its debut, the franchise has evolved from a promising supernatural action series into one of the most influential anime properties of the modern era.
Produced by MAPPA Studio, the anime captivated audiences worldwide with breathtaking animation, unforgettable characters, brutal emotional stakes, and some of the most spectacular fight sequences ever seen in television anime.
Yet despite its enormous success, Jujutsu Kaisen remains one of the most debated series among fans, particularly following the manga’s conclusion.
So what makes Jujutsu Kaisen both a masterpiece and a controversial phenomenon?
Let’s break it down.
👹 The Story: A Dark Twist on Classic Shonen
At its core, Jujutsu Kaisen follows Yuji Itadori, a seemingly ordinary high school student whose life changes forever after he swallows one of the cursed fingers belonging to the legendary King of Curses, Ryomen Sukuna.
This single decision throws Yuji into the terrifying world of Jujutsu Sorcerers, cursed spirits, and supernatural warfare.
While the premise initially feels familiar to longtime shonen fans, creator Gege Akutami quickly transforms the story into something much darker and more unpredictable.
Unlike traditional heroes who save everyone through determination and friendship, Jujutsu Kaisen constantly questions:
⚡ The meaning of justice
⚡ The inevitability of death
⚡ The cost of power
⚡ The impossibility of saving everyone
These philosophical themes elevate the series beyond a standard action anime.
🔥 What Makes Jujutsu Kaisen Special?
Dark and Unpredictable Storytelling
One of the biggest strengths of Jujutsu Kaisen is its willingness to challenge audience expectations.
Characters face real consequences.
Victories often come at devastating costs.
Major deaths occur without warning.
The series creates genuine tension because viewers never feel certain about who will survive.
The horror-inspired atmosphere and psychological intensity make the story far more mature than many traditional battle shonen series.
⭐ The Characters Are the Heart of the Series
Jujutsu Kaisen features one of the strongest modern anime casts.
🕶️ Gojo Satoru
Perhaps the most popular anime character of the decade, Gojo combines overwhelming power, charisma, humor, and emotional depth.
His mentor-student relationship with Yuji became one of the franchise’s biggest highlights.
👹 Yuji Itadori
Unlike many shonen protagonists, Yuji is constantly forced to confront guilt, trauma, and loss.
His internal struggle with Sukuna creates one of anime’s most fascinating hero-villain dynamics.
⚔️ Maki Zenin
Maki’s character evolution is widely praised by fans and remains one of the strongest arcs in the entire series.
💪 Aoi Todo
Todo provides both comic relief and some of the most memorable fight sequences in the franchise.
🤔 The Character Development Debate
While many fans adore the cast, some criticisms have emerged over time.
Certain viewers argue that:
❌ Some supporting characters receive limited development.
❌ The main trio occasionally feels underexplored.
❌ Certain emotional moments arrive before deeper backstories are established.
While these issues don’t significantly damage the overall experience, they remain a common point of discussion within the fan community.
🎬 MAPPA’s Animation Is Simply Extraordinary
If there’s one area where almost everyone agrees, it’s the animation quality.
MAPPA transformed Jujutsu Kaisen into a visual spectacle.
The studio delivers:
✨ Fluid combat choreography
✨ Dynamic camera movement
✨ Incredible visual effects
✨ Cinematic action sequences
✨ Stunning cursed technique animations
From Gojo’s powers to Sukuna’s destructive abilities, every major battle feels like a theatrical event.
The action scenes consistently rank among the best in modern anime history.
⚔️ Some of the Best Fights in Anime
Jujutsu Kaisen has produced numerous iconic battles, including:
🔥 Yuji & Todo vs Hanami
🔥 Gojo vs Jogo
🔥 Sukuna vs Mahoraga
🔥 Maki’s major confrontations
🔥 Shibuya Incident battles
The combination of strategy, animation, and emotional stakes makes these encounters unforgettable.
📖 The Manga Ending: Why Fans Are Divided
The biggest controversy surrounding Jujutsu Kaisen revolves around its final chapters.
Many readers appreciated:
✅ The emotional payoff
✅ Major character resolutions
✅ The conclusion of central conflicts
However, others felt:
❌ Certain storylines remained unresolved
❌ Some characters deserved more closure
❌ The pacing became rushed
❌ Several plot threads needed additional exploration
As a result, the ending generated mixed reactions within the manga community.
While few would call it disastrous, many fans believe the final arc could have benefited from more breathing room.
🌎 Why Jujutsu Kaisen Became a Global Hit
The success of Jujutsu Kaisen isn’t accidental.
The series combines:
⚡ Excellent world-building
⚡ Memorable characters
⚡ Emotional storytelling
⚡ Horror elements
⚡ Spectacular action
⚡ Top-tier animation
These ingredients helped transform it into one of the defining anime franchises of its generation.
Its influence can already be seen across modern anime fandom, merchandise sales, social media culture, and global streaming platforms.
⭐ Final Verdict
Jujutsu Kaisen isn’t perfect.
Its pacing occasionally stumbles, and the manga’s ending remains a topic of heated debate among fans.
However, the series succeeds where it matters most.
It delivers unforgettable characters, emotionally impactful storytelling, breathtaking action, and some of the finest animation ever produced for a television anime.
Whether you’re a longtime anime fan or someone looking for an exciting entry point into the medium, Jujutsu Kaisen is absolutely worth watching.
